Facilitating Their Learning

I've been reading a lot about students guiding their own learning through learning clubs and the Genius hour.  I finished reading Teach Like a Pirate by Dave Burgess and the Passion Driven Classroom by Angelina Maiers and Amy Sandvold.  These books have helped me to remember why I teach in the first place-it IS my passion.  I love to teach and learn and share my love for new things and ideas with others. Thank you to all the educators out there who still believe in the power of students and passion!
Last week, I took this opportunity to see what the students could do with the tools they have already practiced with this year.  Our Social Studies unit is on landforms and water.  I greeted them at the door in my "climbing" gear.  They thought I was going mining (I guess I didn't dress appropriately) but they figured it out.  When they discovered they would be learning about mountains on their own, it was met with some confusion but so much excitement.  As the first day went on we would meet to see what everyone was doing and learning and students were deciding who, if anyone, they wanted to work with.  The students were working on their last bit for mountains which was their sharing of their learning.  Some are doing power points, some making volcanoes, some drawing animals.  I can't wait to share their final projects with the world.  I will be attaching pictures to show how the learning went that week.
